I will be grading your project papers according to this criteria (if you're doing a podcast/video cast, to slight variations of these guidelines).

Hi, Everyone:
Here's the presentation schedule as promised. The order was determined randomly; my daughter picked your names out of a hat. If you don't like your time slot, you can try to trade with someone else. Just let me know if you do this. Also, I expect each of you to be here for your classmates' presentations. Don't assume that because you're not presenting on one day that you can skip that class.
It was brought to my attention last night that there are no length specifications regarding the paper in the syllabus. So, here they are now: your papers should be 7-10 pages in length (not including the bibliography), citing at least 7-10 sources.
If you are doing a podcast or video piece, your submission should be 3-5 minutes in length, accompanied by a 3-5 page summary providing background on your topic and your methodology/experience in creating the podcast/video. This should also include an additional bibliography citing at least 7-10 sources.
If you guys have questions as you're going along, please let me know! Additionally, if you want help with your writing in terms of editing or proofreading before turning the final paper in on December 5th, check out the Writing Center via the UW English department: http://depts.washington.edu/wcenter/
I will be grading more strictly on grammar, flow, and structure for this final project than I did on your journal entries.
Have a good Thanksgiving! I'll post pictures of our workshop soon....
Callie

Fifth journal entry due by 6pm, Wednesday, Nov 7.
The journal entries should include your name, date, and a title. They should be good writing, but do not need to be formal writing! 500-800 words.
Use your powers of observation in a manner that complements your research/project. Please keep the topic of "interaction" in mind.
For this entry, here are more resources for heuristic evaluations. Use them.

Fourth journal entry due by 6pm, Wednesday, Oct 31.
The journal entries should include your name, date, and a title. They should be good writing, but do not need to be formal writing! 500-800 words.
01. Go see the Anthony McCall exhibit at Western Bridge in SODO (free admission, open Th-Sat) and write a review. Does the digital art work have an interactive component? If so, describe it. If not, in what ways could interactivity be integrated into the piece? Also, give your thoughts in general about how the exhibit makes you feel. The emotion it evokes, if any. How does it accomplish this?
OR
02. Research in depth one of the multimedia/digital artists or game designers listed in the Moggridge book or via the list I've provided. Summarize this artist's/designer's work. Voice an opinion about it.

Here's the bio for our guest speaker tonight:
Joel Kollin is a PhD student in the UW's DXARTS program. His background
includes a BSE (Electrical Engineering - Optics
Concentration) from the University of Michigan and an
SM from the Spatial Imaging Group at the MIT Media
Lab, where he built the world's first holographic
video system for his Master's thesis project. As a
Research Engineer at the UW Human Interface Technology
Lab he co-invented the Virtual Retinal Display, now a
commercial product called the Retinal Scanning
Display. He has also worked on holographic
interferometry of laser-plasma interaction
experiments, head-mounted and stereographic displays,
and other forms of 2D and 3D imaging.
His current areas of interest include new display
paradigms beyond "3DTV", measuring how observation
changes the state of macroscopic systems, and
examining the interplay between surveillliance,
empathy and the Other.
Read Moggridge Ch. 8 (what we don't end up going over in class) and Maeda, Ch. 5-6.
Also, a couple more readings for those interested:

Third journal entry due by 6pm, Wednesday, Oct 24.
The journal entries should include your name, date, and a title. They should be good writing, but do not need to be formal writing!
01. Research reviews of the Audi MMI and the BMW iDrive or the iPod vs. the Zune (or any other two media or mp3 players). Based on these reviews, what are the differences between products in terms of the design models presented in class (e.g., Shneiderman, Norman, and Maeda)?
02. Compare two different major news site interfaces in terms of the design models presented in class (e.g., Shneiderman, Norman, and Maeda)?
OR
03. Think of a product or system you have used (one that involves a truly interactive component) that uses storytelling effectively. What story does it tell? How does it tell it?
